Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a middle school on the northwest side of Chicago. The students here are 93.5% Hispanic and 95% are considered low income. We also serve a population that is 27% limited English proficiency.
Kids are kids wherever you go and my students are too despite facing some challenging situations.
These kids are typical middle schoolers- they are energetic, lethargic, advanced and struggling. My classroom has a wide spectrum of levels and experiences but the students are always interesting.
My Project
With a year subscription to the on-line program flocabulary.com, my students will have access to songs and videos that teach new vocabulary through music. While I will primarily use this site for vocabulary instruction, it provides songs and videos across the curriculum including current events.
Hip hop and rap songs and videos will capture my students' attention and make learning fun.
Expanding their vocabulary will improve their reading and writing. The videos on content area topics will build up their interest and background knowledge before launching a new unit.
Being able to provide my students with headphones will help all students have access to the videos and songs at their own pace and allow me to individualize instruction.
