Our classrooms include a two special education classrooms for preschoolers with Autism, a Deaf and Hard of Hearing preschool class, and over six Hi-5 and Kindergarten classes! Our school classrooms are passionate about embracing play and learning in meaningful ways. We want to help these young students learn with a variety of engaging activities that both strengthen their developmental skills and promote a love for learning! These students are engaged, active learners with unlimited potential.
It's our goal to make sure their first school experience helps to support them being excited about becoming successful lifelong learners!
Our students often lack a variety of play skills, have had limited social experiences, and have difficulty building relationships with adults and their peers.
This school is located in an urban setting and serves many children who qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch and experience homelessness. The district has limited funding and early childhood programs rarely receive the materials they need. Most times our families do not have a wide range of resources, and our team tries to create or purchase materials on our own in order to meet our student's needs.
My Project
We want to add playground equipment that will support our academic goals, targeted vocabulary, and improve social emotional/relationship skills. Students will use sand buckets, ice cream scoops and other tools to experiment and build interesting things while expanding their imagination. The large waffle blocks will provide many opportunities for students to use their emerging math skills, practice team work, and share different ideas and creative visions. The outdoor weaving frame allows for artful expression, and review of academic concepts like color, size and texture. For those who really like to move, the basketball hoop offers the chance for improving gross motor coordination, imitation of peers, and beginning sportsmanship.
It's widely known that the playground is the place where students can freely explore, develop friendships, express their creativity, and practice their emerging developmental skills in an authentic setting.
This playground equipment and hands-on learning materials will be used to create an inviting and creative setting where our students will be excited to visit. These materials will provide rich and ample opportunities for students to practice lessons learned in the classroom, in meaningful and age appropriate ways.
