It's hard to believe I have been teaching for 6.5 years! It truly has been an adventure and a blessing in my life! I am a kindergarten teacher at a sweet little school located in the heart of Virginia. Our school is a Title I school that teaches students in grades Pre-K through first.
Every day my students come to school ready to learn with smiles on their faces!
One of my favorite things is that I get to be a part of so many firsts in their lives: the first time they read a book, the first time they write a sentence, the first time they tie their shoes, the first time they lose a tooth .I could go on and on. Every day with my kindergartners is different and I love it!
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and learning opportunities. Some have experienced early learning opportunities while many of them have not. More than half of our school population receives free or reduced-price lunch. We are lucky to have a community partnership that supplies some students with backpacks of food for the weekend.
My Project
Many of my kindergartners are entering a school environment for the first time. By adding a large group rug, my students will learn to respect one's personal space, develop a sense of community, and have somewhere comfortable to sit. It will be the space where we gather for whole group instruction, to complete partner work, and to explore independently.
My current classroom rug is losing the binding at the edges, will no longer lay flat, and is simply not large enough for my entire class to sit comfortably.
I plan to use this new rug as a gathering place for us to learn together. Not only will we focus on academics, but also important social skills needed to be successful in school and life. We will learn about the importance of taking turns, having patience, respecting our surroundings, and so much more by learning to be a classroom community!
By donating to my classroom project, you will be giving my kindergartners a new, clean area to gather, learn, share, read, write, sing, dance, and explore together!
