Learning To Write With Appropriate Materials

My students need primary composition books to give them an age appropriate space to write, pencils to write with and markers to draw with.

My Students

This project will serve a group of elementary aged students who are destined to have huge impacts on the world. Although 90% of them live in poverty, and more than 60% are English language learners, they are hard workers who only wish to achieve, and one day leave their footprint on the world. Many of these young boys and girls are overcoming the language barriers of learning a second language, many of whom are separated from their families who live thousands of miles away. Some live just down the street but need and deserve the enrichment that real-world projects can provide.

My Project

Primary composition notebooks will help my students gain writing skills by giving them an appropriately lined notebook for them to practice writing their stories down. Many families can not afford to supply our classroom with the supplies necessary for students to learn. We also need pencils and markers to help students become successful writers.

I serve a lot of students who come to me with developing literacy skills because they have had minimal opportunities to develop them in their high-poverty homes, and because so many of them are still acquiring English.

My students will use these composition books to write and illustrate on a daily basis. Students will draw and write to tell about their needs, wants, thoughts, and feelings. These books will also give students a place to start writing informational projects. Having all their writing in one notebook will allow students to see their growth over the school year and really seem themselves as a writer.
