Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My classroom is filled with students who have been diagnosed with varying forms of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disabilities, and Emotional Disturbances. As part of our regular instruction, we take a whole-student approach to education that teaches more than just the state-prescribed curriculum. New for us in the 2022-2023 school year is teaching form the perspective of the people, facing inequities throughout the history of the world. Within our classroom, my students come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. With that being said, we have learned that as a whole, my students learn more efficiently in a classroom, where they can relate to the individual they are learning about.

This year alone, we have discussed, Apartheid in South Africa through the eyes of Trevor Noah, the Black Wall Street Massacre from the perspective of Dick Rowland, the Uyghur Muslim Genocide from the Muslim perspective, and the Iran protests from the perspective of a 20-year-old young woman.

When we switched to this new perspective in our global studies classroom, our students' writing performance improved by leaps and bounds. In our classroom, we need as much technology as we can get to continue to improve our podcast...Echoes From the Hall, this chromebook will allow my students to research and express their opinions on the topics we are discussing in the podcast, which aren't typically found within a textbook. Every bit and every perspective will help my students be equipped to tackle the Global Studies regents.
