My Students
I teach some amazing students. I teach Special Education in a school in a small town. My students do amazing things everyday. I am amazed by the student who conquers their fear of entering a noisy room everyday. I get to watch their excitement as we engage in a cooking lesson that engages all learning areas and see that one student who doesn't eat "different things" take a taste of something new.
We celebrate all learning in my classroom.
Whether it is a big or small accomplishment, it is huge in our classroom. I teach the most amazing students you will ever meet. Even faced with Autism, they do amazing things each and everyday. I am so grateful that I get to learn from them.
My Project
I have the privilege of teaching amazing students with Autism. My students have difficulty in the areas of communication and social skills.
All students are motivated by the things that they like, and what student doesn't like toys?
Using toys to encourage spontaneous speech, lengthening utterances, and practicing playing with peers, is essential when teaching students with Autism. These toys in particular will be highly motivating for my kindergarten through grade two students.
Classic toys like play kitchens, puppets, and cause and effect toys are perfect for teaching students to request items, interaction with peers, and construct imaginative play opportunities. These toys will provide my students the opportunity to participate in Pivotal Response Training and Social Skills groups with peers. Keeping students motivated to speak is difficult. Using these items is going to build student vocabulary and spontaneous language.
