My students come from environments that need extra support. My students are not doing math work at grade level, nor are many of them reading at grade level.
Our students come from many cultures; we have more than 47 different languages being spoken at home in our school body.
The kids are all very comfortable with change and inclusion; it is an absolute blessing that our students are willing to share their experiences.
We have almost half of our students receiving subsidized lunches; we work hard to meet the needs of all of our students. We have a food shelf in our school; we have translators who are able to help parents stay involved, and we have a lot of initiatives that provide forward progress. We are blessed with support, but we still have some gaps that need to be filled.
My Project
I teach math intervention for grades 6-8. This year, I want to dedicate a day a week to explore math in a non-traditional mathematics way through games and puzzles. Games and puzzles both teach strategy. If students can think about different strategies to win a game or put a puzzle together then they start building persistence as they encounter setbacks.
To my students, math is a scary, difficult, thing that they do not want to do; this project is set up to change that mindset.
Games will create a fun, competitive atmosphere where making mistakes is all part of winning and losing. Puzzles create spatial awareness along with strategy. (How are you going to sort those pieces to find what you are looking for more easily?) Both create time and space where persevering comes naturally.
After five years of doing intervention work with students, I notice the biggest struggle is getting started. I believe that games and puzzles will help build the bridge to give my students a positive start with mathematics.
