My Students

Jane Goodall said there is little point in conservationists exhausting themselves in trying to protect animals and habitats if they don't at the same time raise young people to be better stewards. I want my students to become better stewards but I need help.

I teach in a school that is high poverty, over 60% are economically disadvantaged.

We have a number of students who are homeless. My school also has a high transiency rate. Just in my classroom alone I have had over 50% of my class come and go during the school year. Many of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Our school is very culturally diverse. I need materials that all my students can read for our science and community service units. That means I need materials on a wide range of reading levels.

My Project

My school is not a Title One school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged. Our district recently adopted Common Core, but we have no classroom library with no materials to teach about contemporary problems. Only one student in my class gets the newspaper at home and none of them reads magazines. My students have nothing that is appropriate and on grade level to read, and as a result they are not able to do reports or participate in class discussions. Having up to date Scholastic News/ Science Spin in the classroom for my students to use on a weekly basis would help them to understand the key concepts and expand their knowledge base about recycling and the environment. These magazines and books have pictures so my students can learn how to read nonfiction articles, captions and headlines. I desperately need these materials to teach my students. I plan to have my students learn about the environment and then teach their 1st grade reading buddies about earth day.

Your wonderful donation and help could make a world of difference to my students.

With your help my students would be able to read and learn about contemporary issues and recycling science. These magazines and books will also improve their reading ability. I am confident that with your support my students would improve their ability to communicate effectively and in turn their self-image would improve. Please help my students.
