Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low-income, urban area and students are diverse in many ways, including ethnically and economically. Over 85% of our K-5th grade students who attend our school are identified as Title I and many are second language learners. During this time of distant learning, many of the students have had limited support and access to resources at home. The students I support in my Early Intervention Program have been identified as at-risk and are performing far below grade level in reading. They want to learn yet they struggle with confidence, they have learning disabilities, and now due to the pandemic, they are further behind than ever before and challenged with adjusting to returning to school in person, away from their devices.
My Project
I teach my students in small groups through interactive, explicit lessons that focus on foundational reading skills that they may be struggling with. These materials would reinforce my lessons by allowing students to create their own phonics and high-frequency word interactive journals—building decoding and reading skills every step of the way! The phonics journal is packed with activities to help students master word families, blends and digraphs, final -e, and more. The high-frequency journal allows children to master two to three of the first 100 high-frequency sight words weekly—independently completing word scrambles, fill-in-the-blank sentences, and much more. These activities are engaging perfect for daily practice in class or at home!
