Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth year NYC public school reading recovery teacher. I work with approximately 16 children in a low income neighborhood in the South Bronx. 96% of the children in my school receive free lunch.
I work with the lowest level children in four first grade classes. Many of my children have never been exposed to books prior to coming to school and many do not understand the concepts of letters and words. My students are so limited in what they know and have been exposed to that I need to quickly boost them to an emergent reader level. I would like to obtain magnetic letters, high frequency sight word cards and easy reader books for them to practice what they are learning. These learning aids would help reinforce what I am teaching. In addition, they would make learning fun and stimulating.
