Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in a low income, urban area. My students are mostly second language learners. Many of the students at my school attend the afternoon program and are at school for almost ten hours daily. They have little support with homework and very few resources at home. Many of the students still have little access to technology. The students who attend my K-2nd Grade Early Reading Pull-out Intervention Program have been identified as at-risk in reading and are reading far below benchmark. They struggle with confidence and lack motivation to read. I offer a variety of differentiated instruction in small groups and on the computers. My program is a gateway before special education, so many of these students display various forms of learning challenges and disabilities and they respond well when using technology and with lots of positive reinforcement.

My Project

Many of our school's students struggle to learn to read and the computer based reading program that I use is engaging for them and truly making a difference! This reading program provides differentiated literacy instruction for students of all abilities in grades pre-K–3. This research-proven program provides explicit, systematic, personalized learning in the six areas of reading instruction, targeting skill gaps as they emerge, and providing teachers with the data and student-specific resources they need for individual or small-group instruction.

When students are using this beneficial computer reading program, the classroom is extremely noisy and unfortunately, I do not have the ability to use the instructional resources and students awards provided .

This program requires the students to use audio but the students do not have any headsets and this can be quite distraciting in a classroom of twenty-five. The small earbuds originally purchased, have wires that are literaly torn out and chewed on and many times the earbuds fall out of the students small ears. Students are challenged to hear their device and remain focused.

This computer reading program also requires a lot of printing. It offers certificates of achievement for students when they complete a level and students are very excited and motivated by this. It provides data for the teacher of students progress. If students struggle, the program also provides specific instructional lessons for a teacher to support individual student learning in small groups. I need a working printer in order to fully implement this program. The scanner would allow me to copy the students' small group work and results and email the information to their homeroom teacher.

With headsets and a printer I could make this computer reading program a fun and exciting tool for my students to learn to read!
