Throughout first grade, my students are learning foundational skills to develop their reading proficiency. Each one of my students is determined, motivated, and excited to learn how to read. After being trained in Orton-Gillingham, I jumped at the opportunity to implement the research-based strategies in my classroom so all my students can succeed. Orton-Gillingham is a systematic and structured method that helps students achieve literacy proficiency. It supports teachers in delivering explicit instruction and offering multi-sensory opportunities for students.
Integrating the Orton-Gillingham approach into my classroom will equip my students with the skills to become efficient readers, writers, and spellers.
Each of the requested items provides students with a hands-on, multi-sensory approach to literacy. Students use the sand trays to practice letter formation and connect each letter to its sound. When learning Red Words, students use crayons and textured plastic canvases to remember the spellings of irregular words. The hand-held mirrors allow students to watch how their lips, tongue, and mouth can produce various sounds. Students use the tiles and dominos to explore the sounds/spellings of words and build new words. The Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tub supplies me with objects to show students as they learn new letters. Finally, the magic wands help enforce the concept of Magic E. I look forward to implementing the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading in my classroom.
