I am a first grade teacher at Edison Brentwood Academy in East Palo Alto, CA. Of the almost 500 students at our K-3 elementary school, 88% qualify for free lunch. Learning to read is an enormous task for all students in first grade, and approximately 90% of the students at my school have the even more difficult task of learning to read in their second language. These students need more help with English language development and reading fluency to be able to succeed and become readers. Last year as a first year teacher, I was able to borrow 4 Leap Pad Learning Systems and books from another teacher who had extra and was extremely pleased with the help they gave my students. Students get to practice reading and fluency without needing a one-on-one situation with the Leap Pads - they read and use the pointer to point to the words as a voice reads them aloud into the headphones. The Leap Pad center was consistently the class\'s favorite learning center during our workshop time. The Leap Pad center combined reading, English language development, and fun. The teacher who I borrowed the Leap Pads from has left the school and I don\'t want to see my students lose such a valuable tool in the classroom. Learning to read is a difficult task for everyone. All students benefit from hearing good reading as they read on their own, and students who are English language learners gain even more from this type of activity. I\'m exited to see my student\'s potential come to life this year with all the right tools. Thanks so much for helping my students love learning.
