Learning to read the old-fashioned way- with books

Help me give my students in middle school a variety of high interest books that can be read in small groups to ignite their reading levels from early kindergarten to fourth or fifth grade level this year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from a very low social economic population where books are not highly esteemed. These students rarely read books and their test scores show it. I’m sure you’ve heard of the lower reading scores. The United States has had. My groups of6, 7, and 8 grade middle schoolers are reading on a kindergarten level which is where a 6 or 7 year old should be reading which are why they are being targeted, being pulled out of classes, and reading in small groupsThey’re getting ready for high school and I need a variety of interesting, entertaining books that can captivate their interest and encourage them to read more.

Last year, thanks for the help of Donors Choose, donors supplied my students with books that enabled them to leap 2 to 3 grade levels from where they started, but we need more sets of books.

I’m looking for even more growth this year. I know they can do it. They get excited when they see new book titles that challenge their comfort levels. They need lots of books to read. We need five copies of each book so everyone in the small groups will be able to have a book to read from.
