My Students
I am thrilled to teach first grade at a Title I school in Concord, California. Roughly 67% of our students are on free and reduced lunch, 34% are English Language Learners, and we offer a free after-school CARES program which provides homework support, supervision, a continued sense of community, and even dinner.
As my students would tell you, they love learning, working together, and developing compassion and tolerance through the controlled chaos of first grade!
They are open-minded, thoughtful, and excited to come to school every day. We know that for our students to be successful in education and future careers they need access to a variety of learning opportunities, using several modalities. Many of our students do not have access to books, computers, or tablets at home. Our school works hard to provide our students with the tools for their success in education today, to nurture future civic minded, skilled individuals for tomorrow.

My Project
This listening station will help to build a love of reading, books, and literacy for my students. As a first grade teacher I am charged with helping them become successful beginning readers. Many of my students do not have books to snuggle up with at home, or someone to read with them. My goal is to create a listening center in my classroom where they know there is always an amazing book to share with classmates, and have read to you. I strive every day to make our classroom literacy rich where words, books, and authors are celebrated, studied, and enjoyed.
This listening center will open up their world and develop dreams by helping them learn to read.
With over a third of my students being English language learners, from countries all over the globe, we work hard on building their vocabularies and developing their reading skills. Having access to great children's books, with many read by the authors, helps to grow their passion for reading.
