I need help to cover travel and lodging expenses for the Leveled Literacy Intervention workshop in St. Louis, Missouri so I can better help Middle School students become strong readers.
My students are primarily English Language Learners. This means that they speak at least one other language than English either in their homes, with their families, or friends. What is unique about our school, is that we represent 45 different languages! So many of these students are immigrants and refugees. For some, this means that they have had limited or interrupted schooling in their home countries. For others, while they may have started school early here in the US, their parents never had the opportunity to attend a school or to learn to read in English or their home language.
The experiences of students with limited or interrupted schooling can make literacy challenging but they experience great growth and success when provided with appropriate tools and opportunities.
Our school places great value on honoring the experiences and traditions that our students bring with them and while preparing them to be successful in our current education system and society by providing support for students to develop in their Zone of Proximal Development with engaging and rigorous instruction, experiences, and activities.
My Project
This year our school started an intervention and enrichment program to help students expand and grow. In my intervention class, students in 5th-8th grade are reading at the Fountas and Pinnell levels A-K. For perspective, these levels are aligned to Kindergarten and First Grade Readers.
Students in the Phonics Intervention at Clinton School are learning to read for the first time in an environment where they feel safe to take risks at their level.
By attending the Leveled Literacy Intervention workshop in Saint Louis, I will be better able to reach my students' needs through reading instruction this year, during summer school, and for many years ahead!
Please help me equip these aspirational middle school students with the incredible gift of literacy because as Dr. Suess reminds us, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
