My students love being called to my table for guided reading. They are very excited about learning to read a book on their own. My goal is for all of my students to be on grade level or above in reading my the end of the year.
My students are mostly low income minority students where over 90% receive free or reduced lunch.
Even though they may not have the resources at home, they are very eager to learn and come to school excited each day. My students are also from mostly single parent households. Students from over 20 different countries are represented at our school, many of whom come to school speaking little or no English. Interpreters are available to children and their families when needed. My school has caring and professional teachers that help all students become the best that they can be. The smiling faces that we see each morning are willing to do their best through any adversity that they may be dealing with.
I am requesting a set of Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tubs, one CVC Word Work Center, one Read, Build & Write Magnetic Sight-Word Board, one Teaching Tubs Storage Rack, and two Rubber Stamps - Lowercase kits. The phonics items that I requested for my classroom will be used during guided reading lessons and in literacy centers to assist the students in learning letter sounds as well as be able to compose three letter words. The alphabet sounds teaching tubs will give my students a hands on way to see the connection between items and the sounds that they begin with. This activity will address the needs of many different learning styles in students. Being able to touch the items will help the hands on learner as well as the student who is struggling with the English language. The CVC words center will be used in a center to assist students in small groups to use pictures and letter sounds to make three letter words. These beginning activities will be very helpful for beginning reading in kindergarten. These items will be used throughout the year for students at different ability levels.
Donations to this project will give my students additional support in their literacy instruction.
My students come to school at a disadvantage from the beginning and donations to this project offer them extra supplies that will only enhance their learning experience. The English Language Learners will greatly benefit from the hands on manipulatives, as they become familiar with letter sounds. These literacy items will be used by many children for years to come in my classroom.
