Learning To Read A Painting: Building Visual Literacy
My students need 9 books about artists and picture books to learn how to "read" a painting/drawing/illustration and enhance their visual literacy skills.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Looney's classroom raised $166
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students love looking at examples of artwork through prints or picture books, but have struggled with being able to communicate what they see. By having picture books and books about artwork, they can practice their visual literacy skills and enhance their vocabulary at the same time.
My students attend an urban, inner city school in Connecticut.
The majority qualify for free and reduced lunch. In order for my students to have a well-rounded education, the arts are an integral part. By practicing visual arts, it has been shown that students can improve concentration and focus in other academic areas. Students who often struggle with other aspects of school find a refuge in making and creating art.
My Project
The students I teach need constant practice communicating their amazing ideas. Having books with examples of artwork to inspire them and interest them will help to improve their oral language skills and their visual literacy skills and they will take this new knowledge back to their classrooms with them.
Your donation will help literally hundreds of students each week become more knowledgeable about how to speak about art confidently, having learned by practicing looking at book illustrations and examples of artwork.
