This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First grade is a time not only for children to learn how to read, but to open their eyes to the exciting adventures inside of books. It is my goal to provide my students with a plethora of opportunities to internalize reading strategies that will make them fantastic life-long learners.

In my inner city public school, I will have the pleasure of working with 25 first grade students this upcoming year.

The children come from high poverty and are eager for opportunities to learn and become great readers! Students come into first grade with varying levels of ability. Some of my students do not speak English at home, so they have limited access to literacy resources outside of school. Therefore, it is my goal to immerse my students in various rich English language experiences to help them love reading just as much as I do!

My Project

In order to submerge my students in as many meaningful moments as possible, diverse literacy centers are key. These literacy materials will be used in centers to help students become better readers. The read-along listening center will allow my students to hear another adult voice read almost like there is another teacher in the classroom. I have also requested some read-along books with accompanying Cd's so that my students can practice reading by themselves and with a partner in the new listening center. Additionally, the read-along storage unit will make it easy for my kids to safely move the materials to a cozy spot in the classroom to get lost in a classic book. With the listening center my students will be reading fluently in no time!

My goal is to make learning fun and provide a positive atmosphere for my students to grow.

I believe this listening center will support and reinforce the concepts taught during whole group lessons in literacy to provide another unique experience for my students to reach their goals. My students deserve the opportunity to fall in love with the joy of reading. Let's face it, there is nothing better than a good book!
