My Students
I am a librarian at a junior high school that houses 7th & 8th graders at a Title I school in a small town in Texas. About 41% of the children in our county live in poverty. For many of them, school is the one constant in their lives. I strive to maintain an organized, student-centered learning environment. I am starting a Maker Space this year to allow students to have some flexible learning time and stretch their imaginations outside of the classroom.
My students depend on me and each other to help them through their daily lives. We are a close-knit "family" and are governed by a student-made social contract.
My Project
Our school is a Title I school with 71% economically disadvantaged students. The average age of our library is 2003, with many of our books falling apart. Unfortunately our school budget doesn't allow much room for updating. This project would allow us to fill our library with more up to date books that are relevant to our students. I chose books that are current and interesting to 7th and 8th graders. I also chose new adaptations of classics such as Romeo and Juliet in graphic novel form (my students love graphic novels!).
