Learning to Love Reading

My students need new, exciting books to motivate them to become better readers! As a first year teacher I have limited books in my classroom to instill a love of reading in my students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a group of dynamic, diverse, and energetic fourth graders. Our class is composed of students that live in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Our neighborhood school serves a predominantly hispanic student body.

All students and teachers at our school learn and grow as bucket fillers; we aim high to make sure every student has a full bucket.

We believe that each and every person on this planet carries an invisible bucket that can be filled with compliments and kind deeds and can be dipped into by disrespectful words and actions. We work hard to fill buckets to ensure that every student feels respected, safe, and excited to learn each and every day at our school. As our principal always says, "bucket filling isn't just kid stuff, it's life stuff!"

My Project

Reading is arguably the most important foundational skill that students learn in elementary school. As a first year teacher, I have only a small collection of old and outdated books to offer to my students in our classroom library. With your donation, I will be able to double the size of our small library!

Many of my 4th-grade students are reading below grade level and are in need of some new and exciting books to motivate them to become better readers.

With the addition of new books to our classroom, my hesitant readers will have access to books that are at their reading level and that will inspire them to keep reading outside of the classroom as well. Additionally, my avid readers, who have already read many of the books in our room, will have more books to get their hands on and thus further their learning.

Students will be able to enjoy these new books in our cozy, carpeted classroom library. They will be able to curl up with a good book during our daily reading block and during our daily quiet reading time after recess. These books will also be checked out by my students and taken home where they will reinforce their reading skills.

As my students learn and grow throughout the 4th grade these new books will push their thinking, transport them to other worlds, and encourage them to become lifelong readers.
