My class is a fourth and fifth grade combination two-way dual immersion classroom in a STEAM school. We are half native-English speakers and half native-Spanish speakers. It is amaizing to see the cooperation that happens in dual-immersion classrooms!
In my class, everyone is a language leader!
Because we are all learning a new language, everyone gets an opputunity to be a language leader and role model in their home language. Students work together and help eachother master the content as they navigate and learn both languages.
Reading should be a social activity done with real world books that kids enjoy! By making reading a social activity, kids learn to talk about what they are reading and encorperate reading as a practice in their lives. They learn to anylize what they are reading and discuss the characters like real people. Having multiple copies of different books available makes this possible.
Historical fiction like "Johnny Tremain" makes history come alive for students.
Fantasy and science fiction like "A Wrinkle In Time" "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Enders Game" ignite students creativity. Realistic fiction like "Lemonade Wars" and "Pax" help students to understand what life is like for people in other areas of the world. As they learn about the world, they also learn to love stories and reading!
