Help me give my students a reading experience that reflects the language most of them hear at home and stories that resonate with them, as I work to build a lifelong love of reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I serve as librarian in an elementary school where 80% of our students are English Language Learners. However, only 20% of the books in our library are in Spanish. It's important that our students see themselves in our collection, both culturally and linguistically.
Fostering a love of reading is foundational to a child's future.
A broad selection of titles increases the chances that they will find a book that resonates with them and makes them want to keep reading. For many of them, that isn't easy because our selection is so thin. I became a librarian after watching a Pre-K student *dance* across the room when she saw a Dora the Explorer book. I knew then that I wanted to replicate that feeling as often as possible. Even our book fairs are grossly lopsided in English titles versus Spanish ones. I never want our library to send a message that their native language is somehow less.
