This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to math class excited, full of energy, and eager to begin. However, place value and computation are skills that are hard for them to comprehend with paper and pencil.
I have the pleasure of working with outstanding children.
They come to school prepared to learn and try their best to achieve our high expectations every day. Our school is located in a low income area with most students receiving free or reduced lunch. Many students come from single family homes. Most of my students have working parents or parents that do not speak English so reinforcement of daily skills is not supported at home.
My Project
Ten frames reinforce counting, 1-to-1 correspondence, base 10, place value, number patterns, and operations. This provides a fantastic way to get students to conceptualize numbers. Students will physically be able to put together and break apart numbers. First grade students need to use their hands, and these ten frames offer hands-on engagement as students place magnetic counters on boards, then raise boards to show their answers. This year we are implementing Common Core at our school and we need resources to help students visualize these math concepts.
Math is a vital subject, students must grasp mathematical concepts to move on to a higher education.
I want to provide my students with a solid foundation that they can build on every year. It is my goal to use this tool to create a life long love for math!
