Have you ever picked up something in another language that was difficult to read? For students learning to read books that are too difficult for them sometimes feel as though they are trying to read another language.
My students are in a first grade inclusion classroom in NY state.
As part of a high needs/low income district the availability for resources is very limited. I recently changed grade levels and inherited a classroom that had a limited classroom library. Sadly many of the books in the library were missing covers or pages and were not an appropriate reading level or age appropriate topics.
My Project
I am requesting books and a literacy activity. The read around the room activity will require students to find words around our classroom and record the words they know and do not know. I need these 50+ high quality books that are leveled using the Fountas and Pinnell system to provide instruction that matches the needs of my students. My goal is to be able to provide the best possible instruction in small groups that focuses on the needs of the individual learners in my classroom. My students will learn how to decode or sound out words, make predictions, identify the main idea and respond to literature. Some of my students have very little print resources at their houses and rely on the materials in school for learning. My students cherish the books that are available to them at this time and I am excited about the excitement a shipment of new books will invoke and the many lessons that we can learn as a result of the expanded selection of reading materials.
Many of my students have very little to be proud of in their lives and are at a critical stage of their development.
Reading is an area of learning that many of my students have great potential for success if it is nurtured in the right environment. I am confident that my students can be successful and proud readers, but I need your help! With the right resources I know that my students will be on the path to success because reading has the power to open so many doors throughout their lives.
