Learning to Love and Care for Baby Siblings

Help me give my students two lifelike baby dolls, clothing, pretend food, baby care accessories, a nurse role play costume, and books about having new baby siblings at home.

My Project

Students with special needs are sometimes faced with accepting and interacting with new baby siblings. Many times we hear from their parents that this process is not always easy. Introducing lifelike babies and their care accessories, along with books about new babies, during classroom social lessons will help students learn how to love on, accept, and care for their new family member while in a safe environment.

Adding realistic-looking baby dolls to our class will help my students relate what they are learning to real life, which will help them transfer what they learn to home.

They will be able to learn how to safely hold babies, and more importantly how to be gentle with them and care for their needs. Baby clothing, pretend food, a high chair, feeding accessories, and a diaper bag with diapers will allow them to role play with guidance from adults.

A nurse role play outfit with medical accessories will allow them to not only check on their baby's health, but it may also help them minimize their own fears of going to the doctor. Books about adding a new baby to the family will help open up a conversation with students about their fears, concerns, excitement, and dreams about their time with their new sibling and allow them to have these things discussed in a safe space.

Because students with special needs oftentimes need modeling of concepts and repetition to help them learn, using these baby care items and stories regularly in class will help reinforce baby care and acceptance not only in their homes but also with other babies in public.
