Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom consists of providing my students with a variety of learning opportunities, and age appropriate materials to facilitate learning. It is important for my students to develop their social-emotional, cognitive, language, and fine motors skills, through hands-on learning. Due to continued insufficient funds I am unable to provide my students with a functional hands on learning environment that will enhance these skills.
My classroom is a special education preschool of 8 students who have been identified with a variety of disabilities such speech and language delays, autism, cerebral palsy, other health impairments, and intellectual disability.
I sincerely say that my students whose ages range from 3-4 years old all have exceptional qualities. They are enthusiastic to come to school, and actively show an eagerness to learn though our teacher directed activities, and peers. Our classroom is located in an economically disadvantaged area in where there's a high percentage of English Language Learners. I would also like to add that for most of my 'kiddos' this is their first school experience, and with that said I want them to come to school eager to learn everyday!
My Project
Reading books, and using engaging materials with children at a very early age has been proven to help them build literacy/language skills, and cognitive learning. Picture books will help my students build new vocabulary, and acquire better listening skills. A huge reward in our classroom is teaching my young students to fall in love with reading, valuing, caring, and handling books in an appropriate way.
Adding book sets like the “Touch and Feel Discovery Books” to our library, will engage my students visually, and also give them sensory feedback when they feel the different textures on each page.
Books such as “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, and Panda Bear, Panda Bear What Do You See?” encourages my students with limited language the opportunity to participate, and sing along with the use of repetitive phrases. Because my students learning abilities, and attention spans vary I have included books, at different levels. For example, my younger students may begin with simple books such as “First Words Board Books”. I have also included, an amazing “Pet Vet Center” that includes materials that will be displayed in our dramatic play area, which will encourage my students to interact with each other as they help care for animals. I am hoping that in getting these materials funded it will make a difference, and encourage my students to be compassionate, loving and care towards animals.
