This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we prepare our students to meet the challenges and receive the benefits of the increasingly diverse world they will have to live in? Help me teach my students to respect and value people regardless of the color of their skin or the language they speak.
My students are first graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.
There are 15 boys and 7 girls between the ages of 6 and 7. My class, composed of 100% Latino students, have parents that come from various parts of Latin America.
My Project
A child's age is one of the most important factors in considering how to begin a discussion on any kind of topic. I believe my students are ready to hear and learn about the things that make people different and about respecting diversity. Right now is a great opportunity for my students to learn to live respectfully together, benefit from one another's experiences and to learn to live in this diverse world. For this reason I am asking for the book "The Color of Us" by Karen Katz to help my first graders understand and discuss what diversity means and how it applies to them. I am also asking for three iPod Touch devices to be able to research about different cultures and diversity issues and allow them to make personal connections. They would also have the opportunity to visit Todd Parr's website and create pages for their own books about diversity.
Please help me teach my students about diversity and to become empathetic human beings.
Help my students accept and value the rich and diverse world we live in by providing them with the necessary tools.
