Learning to Listen, Love, and Laugh: The Tuesdays Project

My students need, in order to build a relationship with an elder, letterhead, markers, various technology supplies, including DVDs for burning and envelopes for gifting, and flash drives and microphones for the production of their tribute videos.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Rolinson's classroom raised $400

I am an English teacher that wants her students not only to read about life, but to experience it vicariously through the eyes of a wiser, seasoned elder. I teach English 10 in a sub-rural Pennsylvania high school of approximately 600 students. Our school community is diverse--a blend of spacious farms, neighborhood homes, and dense row houses. My students face the same challenges that teenagers all over the United States are facing. One of these challenges lies in their constant access to all things technological. With cell phones and mp3 players occupying their ears, often they are not used to stopping and listening. My goal with this project is to help students realize the value of listening to and learning from someone who has a story to tell. After we read the book "Tuesdays With Morrie" by Mitch Albom, my students will travel to local nursing homes on multiple occasions to hopefully have the same life-changing experience that the book's author had. He was completely changed from a self-absorbed, career-obsessed maniac to a sensitive, caring servant who became concerned more about others than about himself. I believe that allowing my students to have this type of experience while in high school leaves an impression on who they become later in life. What type of college preparation could be more beneficial than one that allows students to discover careers in the "real world" of social services and medicine in the midst of serving and learning from an elder? To accomplish all that I want this project to achieve, I am in need of supplies. My students will write letters to the resident and produce a Tribute video, which they will present to the resident on our third and final visit. The purpose of this project is two-fold. I do want to serve my students by opening this opportunity to them, but I also want them to see what a joy it is to bring a smile to someone's face. The supplies I need are for communicating with the residents (stationery) and preparing the Tribute video (DVDs, DVD sleeves, flash drives, microphones, and permanent markers). With your help, I will be able to give my students an experience that most would never undertake on their own. If this experience transforms the thinking of even one of my students and brightens the day of even one nursing home resident, I will have considered this project a success.
