Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During each busy day, we meet with many students to continue to develop their language skills. But, there never seems to be enough time to move them as far along as we would like. Having books and CD's which the students can listen to in groups will enable my students to progress further with reading.

I am the lucky teacher of a class full of enthusiastic, interested students who need support with their reading and writing.

Many do not have the skills in these areas as fully developed as they should be, and as they would like to be. While working in guided reading groups and reading and writing independently are key components to further their progress, so too, is listening to well-written and illustrated literature. Hearing literature read well will enable my hard-working students to model this reading and raise their reading and writing levels to be closer to on-grade level, allowing for more educational success as well as a boost to their self-confidence, which always inspires my kids.

My Project

My students love to read! We participate in a reading program called The Daily 5, which includes not only reading and writing, but also listening to reading. We would love to make excellent use of the requested book and CD collections to listen to literature in small groups. Each student will have, in his or her own hands, a copy of the book being listened to. Thus, they will be able to view all of the illustrations as well as the words as they are being read. Listening to literature will aid my students in developing their reading fluency and expression, as well as strengthening their decoding and spelling skills. When students' reading levels rise, their chances for success increases dramatically and they become more confident workers, willing and able to take more risks with their learning, a goal I have for them. When students embrace reading through all modalities, doors open for them; doors which they need opened in order to further their lifelong learning.

I am confident that "listening to reading" will be a favorite part of my students' days.

Imagine the independence these fourth graders will feel when they can get together and listen to a book and then share their questions, insights, and opinions about the books together. These books and CD's will complement the guided reading and independent reading that my students complete on a daily basis, and will put them on the path to becoming the most successful readers they are able to be!
