Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

“A champion is someone who does not settle for that day's practice, that day's competition, that day's performance. They are always striving to be better. They don't live in the past.” -Briana Scurry, USA National Team Goalkeeper I have the privilege to work with a group of 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls in our school’s Saturday enrichment program (I also teach 2nd grade ESL during the school week). Our school is located in a high need area with 99% of our kids eligible for the free breakfast and lunch program (Title 1). Though the students at our school are confronted by a number of obstacles they work hard to not allow those obstacles to derail them. One of the ways our school attempts to support our students is by providing a Saturday enrichment program. Students have an opportunity to get reinforcement in reading, writing an math. Students also participate in an arts program and those that choose can also play soccer. Soccer was a hook for many students to join the Saturday program. Many have come from places around the world where soccer is popular. Upon arriving in the United States they have not had the opportunity to play. Space and equipment are expensive and beyond the means of many of the young players. Our school has provided us with space and now we are looking for equipment. The 20 soccer balls will allow players to work on individual skills. The two goals will provide an opportunity for the players to incorporate individual assets in a team setting. Organized athletic activities provide students with a number of benefits. Academic improvement, increased self confidence and development of teamwork skills have all been linked to organized team sports. The beauty of soccer is that you don't need much. So long as each player has a ball to practice with we can have a successful experience. My students will develop various soccer skills such as passing, dribbling and shooting. Through the practices students will also be learning about discipline, working with others an pushing themselves. The ultimate goal being that this transfers in students performance outside of the soccer field. With your help these students can pursue their passion and develop important skills for inside and outside the classroom. Your support is crucial for the success of our program and the success of our kids.
