This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
I am excited about this project as it allows the students to more actively participate in the fundraising project. Rather than me explaining why these books are important to the book club, I also learned about why they make the commitment they do to book club and why they chose these books.
The students run the book club and one of their greatest obstacles is getting copies for all the members. Though the library will have copies, often there are not enough for all to read at the same time. They worked as a group to suggest and choose books they will read. Then, for this project, they chose which books they wanted to raise funds to buy. Since it is close to the end of the year and we are getting one title through Big Read LA, they chose How To Be Brave and In the Name of Friendship.
One of the best skills the students have developed in the project is putting together this proposal. In order to do this successfully students had to be able to articulate the purpose and value of this project, to follow the guidelines presented, and to plan ahead both with the book club choices and for the campaign. These are essential skills for both college and career and ones that do need to be practiced to develop.
In Their Own Words
We need 10 copies of How to be brave by E. Katherine Kottaras and In the name of Friendship by Marilyn French for our book club members. While each member is unique, we all share a love for reading. My goal is to bring the members together using books as a medium. We choose these books, because they inspire the reader to take a stand and become a better version of themselves. We ask a donor to not just for book, but the opportunity to learn to overcome life's challenges.
Members have 2 weeks to read the books. When we distribute the books we will set a date for discussion. I will prepare a mixture of general questions (What did you think?) and specific questions (When the character chose x, what would you have done? Why did she do that?). Some members might love the book, while others loath it. This will determine whether our talks go smoothly or become heated debates. Either way, the discussion will be a success.
I have always wanted an environment where I could express my love for reading openly, where I could talk on-and-on about books. The book club provides this for book worms like me. The book club has created an environment where people understand why you cried after the boy reunited with his girlfriend after a long intense journey or where you can rant about the author killing off your favorite character. The book club is where passionate readers unite and share books they loved or hated.
