Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Each year, my special needs students complete a unit on "How To" writing, and they are always inspired to write about cooking! The class is always amazed to hear we can make some of their favorite foods in our very own school. Please help give our class a waffle and pizza maker to create the student's favorite treats for ourselves and the opportunity to document this process in our own "How To" books!

Preparing her or his own food nurtures a child's confidence in the kitchen and beyond and also teaches students necessary life skills.

Following a recipe teaches students building block skills like close reading, sequencing, following directions, measuring, and using fractions. Cooking a meal inspires self-confidence and a greater understanding of nutrition. WRITING about what you have cooked takes this process to a whole new level, and allows our students to become experts and teachers of a skill they have learned.
