The students at my school arrive every day ready to learn. They come to school to gain skills and build their independence as they grow into young adults.
All of my students have special needs, which can make both school and their lives at home very difficult.
Many of my students would like to become more independent, but are not sure how to learn the necessary skills. I create instructional opportunities in my classroom so they can practice skills in a real-world environment. We learn money skills, and hands-on science everyday as my students learn to live on their own and participate in society in a positive way.
My Project
As students with special needs grow and leave school, they often need help learning to live on their own and take care of themselves. We can provide this training within the classroom as long as we have the appropriate materials.
With the cooking supplies requested in this project, I can incorporate measuring into my math lessons and following simple recipes and procedures into science.
My students will learn to make simple meals for themselves and their families, and build their independence in a safe, school environment where they will be assisted and guided along the way. Some example meals include soup, pasta, and quesadillas. While most people learn to cook through experience at home, my students require explicit instruction in food safety and preparation so they can safely navigate adulthood and take care of themselves.
