Learning to Communicate Through Play

Help me give my students an opportunity to learn through play with the community helpers vehicle play-set. They will also learn cause and effect skills with the roll and race activity ramp!

My Students

I work with children with disabilities ranging from 3 years to 13 years in a public school. We have a blended voluntary pre-kindergarten and I have several 3-year-old toddlers that drive-in for speech or language therapy.

All of my students are eager to communicate as effectively as their peers.

Some of my students have severe communication needs while others need my help and support to get them ready for kindergarten in regular education. Communication is the most powerful connection humans can make with each other. I am fortunate to be able to help children learn effective communication skills.

My Project

Young children first learn to communicate through gestures, sounds and eye contact. Then they learn through watching others and dramatic play. Children with communication delays have a more difficult time learning those first steps.

Communication is the most important skill for children to learn.

The vehicles will spark interest in the children. They will be able to ask to play with them, see how they work and group them by color, size, shape and function. The community helpers will further increase their dramatic play in a functional way. Finally, the ramps will provide cause and effect situations with lots of added opportunities to expand on vocabulary. Children will be able to add, smooth, bumpy, wiggly, fast, slow and so many other words to their ever expanding vocabulary!
