Mrs. Willis from Indianapolis IN is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need financial assistance so that I can attend training to gain a deeper understanding of how to teach social and emotional learning and yoga to the children and staff at my school.

Our children range from 4 to 6 years in age. We are truly a classroom family as we stay together for two consecutive years. I try my best to provide a classroom environment that can be a refuge for every child.
Students support, challenge, and love each other every day!
For many students, our classroom is their first taste of school. Children form their ideas of learning and school in these early years. It is my desire to not only show them the importance of learning to read and write, but also showing them how important it is to build social and emotional skills that will help them for the rest of their lives! Collaboration and community are the heart of our classroom. We work on being respectful, peaceful, and kind to each other and ourselves every day.
When I first began my career as an educator, I would come home feeling the weight and stress of a day in the classroom. I began to seek out yoga and mindfulness as a refuge after a hard day in the classroom. I was able to see and feel how my yoga and mindfulness practice was helping me in all aspects of my life.
After seeing how my yoga practice influenced my life in the most incredible way, I decided to bring what I had learned through my own journey to the children in my classroom.
I began to see my students use the mindfulness strategies I was showing them when they would feel frustrated or upset. I would also have students remind me to take a "belly breath" when they saw that I was upset.
I am so looking forward to expanding my knowledge of social and emotional learning, as well as becoming a certified yoga instructor. I can't wait to take all that I will learn from the Breathe for Change training back to the students and staff at my school!
