The student body is one that faces economic struggles and hardships. The entire student body receives free breakfast, while over 60% receive free or reduced-priced lunch. Furthermore, the students are faced with challenging home life and social situations, which can sometimes make it difficult to keep students truly engaged and interested in their own learning.
While they face these struggles, the students' efforts have still helped the school receive an "A" school status.
I'm hoping for new classroom tools and resources to use to boost the engagement of my students so that they will continue to make strides to reach their full potential.
My students will benefit from having a set of the books Freak the Mighty so that they can continue to grow their reading skills all while finding a love for reading.
Not only will they improve their reading skills, they will be making deep connections.
Prior to this book, we have read the book Wonder, which also has the same theme, kindness. Furthermore, by making these text to text connections, my hopes are that they make even deeper connections. A connection to their life.
By using these novels and studying the theme of kindness, my hopes are to not only shape the minds of bright readers, but to also shape the minds of kind children.
