Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Young children often have difficulty seeing the world through the eyes of another person, or seeing how they can help make a situation better for another person. I strive each day to help my students become better people. With the addition of a few more books on this topic to add to my current library of books to read aloud and discuss, students will have more opportunities to learn about and internalize the concepts of compassion, kindness, and caring by putting themselves in the 'shoes' of another person. The discussions we have will help them identify concrete ways to show compassion/kindness/caring to their classmates, family members, other students in our school, and people in their neighborhood and community.
Compassion and kindness go hand-in-hand, and I would like to foster acts of compassion and kindness performed by my students.
These acts will be documented and recognized, and students will have an opportunity to receive a reward for exhibiting compassion, kindness, and caring.
As we read these books, along with others I already have, and have class discussions, students will begin to develop a sense of how others feel in certain situations, like losing a favorite toy on the playground, being bullied by another student, being called names because of a disability or the way someone dresses or looks, etc.
In addition, students will demonstrate that they understand how their actions (both positive and negative) affect others by writing an essay where they define compassion and identify ways that they will show compassion to others.
Through our class discussions, and the essays students write, we can develop a list of possible actions that demonstrate compassion for others. Students will earn 'raffle' tickets for acts of compassion and kindness that will go into a drawing for 'special' high-value prizes purchased through this project.
