Help me give my students board games to using during the winter months. Students will have the opportunity to practice following the rules of game, turn taking and sportsmanship.
My students are fantastic little people! They are full of energy, love learning and being here at school. They also love getting exercise and participating in movement activities. From K1-grade 5 I have 100% participation in nearly all of my gym classes. I love being active with my students and look forward to teaching them how to keep their bodies healthy and strong every day!
Our school population is predominantly low socio-economic standing with 77% of our community considered high need.
Organized sports teams, as well as the equipment needed to participate in those sports, can be expensive. For some families it is not an option and therefore recess is where most of their exercise and team- like experiences happen. That is why it is so critical, even in the winter months, for our students to have an opportunity to move, practice teamwork and sportsmanship.
My Project
At our awesome school, we sadly do not have an indoor gym, or a space to use for movement during cold winter months. We layer up and go outside as often as we can, being in Boston there are still stretches of days, or even weeks, where we are stuck inside due to cold temperatures or, a snow-covered schoolyard. While board games do not provide the same physical exercise that traditional sports do they still provide a fun opportunity for students to practice many of the same skills we work on outside. Some of those skills include taking turns, following the rules of a game and being a good sport.
