This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our student directed classroom is designed to teach students to combine fun with high expectations and work ethic. Students design and implement routine as I assist with creative, interactive resources, and curriculum. I connect with middle school students by building individual confidence and family bond.
Our 7th grade students are not be asked to bring school supplies because many cannot afford them.
Students have minimal access to technology at home. Many students are separated from one or both parents, and English is a second language for them. Average reading levels are between 2nd-5th grade. Students are living in conditions, exposing real world problems and social and emotional issues. Because these students are so young, emotional stability, and academic success is often compromised.
Our school has no parent support committee, little parent involvement, and teacher-parent language barriers. Teachers developed a program to complete homework and enhanced learning opportunities for students after school.
Student test scores last year were 70% passing in reading, and 40% passing in math. School starts in two days, and are in the process of finding a SpEd teacher for language arts inclusion classes, emphasizing the importance of effective engaging and differentiated lessons.
My Project
Students will: increase attention span by self checking and marking paper, build confidence with written and multiple choice responses, reading assessments, and teaching students to defend their answers, prevent mistakes to earn scores reflective of ability, encourage parent involvement, surpass high academic expectations.
Swagger is a mnemonic to teach students to: S- Stay Positive- stress balls, stickers, W- Wait to Read- highlighters, A- Always use Context Clues- post-it notes, G- Go backwards- neon slap bracelets, bookmarks, G- Gain confidence- gum, mints, E- Evidence- colored pens, R- Reread- erasers, mustache tattoos.
Students will: dance with a funny video, use PP to learn details , demonstrate mastery of each step, help each other, show off swagger struts, and use these tools as a guide for answering questions all year. My students need: stress balls, stickers, highlighters, mints, bookmarks, slap bracelets, colored pens, erasers, gum, note cards, mustache tattoos, post-its, and game props.
Show kids you love them, care, and will do whatever it takes to support their growth socially, emotionally, and academically.
Show kids you work hard for them, and they're your oysters.
Teachers across all subjects get frustrated with "minimal effort" and "weak responses." I disagree. We need to show students what our expectations are, and teach them how to meet them with specific instructions and concrete tasks. This unit motivates students and provides tools to succeed in all subjects.
