My Students

I am a special education teacher in a Title 1 school. Our school is made up of a 75% Latino population. This significant latino population creates a huge language barrier. Our biggest challenge is that most of our parents speak only Spanish and they do not have access to technology at home.

My school is very diverse with a significant Latino population.

With this population we have huge language barriers because the students only hear English in the school setting. I am a special education teacher and I not only have the challenge of working with students who are second language learners, my students also have special needs. The exceptionalities include: Specific Learning disabilities, Mild Intellectual disabilities, behavior and personality disorders, Autism, etc. These students need a variety of visual stimulation to increase understanding. I try to provide as much live, real world experiences as possible through pictures, videos, music, etc. The Macbook will allow us to use Podcasts, live streaming, digital presentation, and other programs that can read and model books to help with fluency.

My Project

My students need an apple Macbook Pro, Microsoft Office Professional and a Geek Squad protection plan to enhance the learning taking place in our classroom. Some of our students who don't have access to technology at home or that have parents who are non English speakers can have access to the Macbook to listen to books being read to them. I can create videos of me reading books and providing explanations and vocabulary while they are listening individually or as a group. This will allow me to teach different groups of students who need to be read to at the same time.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by providing my students the opportunity to learn through a variety of resources.

It will help me to differentiate instruction to meet the needs and learning levels of my students. This project will give my students a chance to have an active roll in their learning and be more independent. It will change their lives by providing them practice with authentic computer skills they will utilize in their everyday lives
