Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a kindergarten to 1st grade autism core class. My students' needs vary from sensory and tactile deficits to auditory stimulation. I have a group of 7 wonderful students, each with their own unique personality that makes our class, our class!
My students thrive in sensory-rich environments that allow them to explore their senses, while bringing them focus when we engage in our classwork.
One of my students needs auditory and tactile stimulation in the form of sounds and feelings close to his ears (usually around his neck). I found that he enjoys using a toy called a Pop Toob that makes a CRUNCH sound as it's stretched, so I made sure to include this toy, and others, on our donation list.
Our class loves using sensory items and dramatic play toys, and are just beginning to learn how to play cooperatively. If we receive all the items on our list, then the children will have that many more opportunities to gain the skills they need as they grow older.
My Project
My classroom is currently lacking toys for the students to play with. We have a few puzzles and blocks, but these toys do not meet the sensory and social needs of my students. Some of my students become easily distracted or frustrated during the day. With the sensory toys, my students will be able to focus for longer periods of time and stay engaged during work sessions.
Dramatic play allows children to create their own world, and to share that world with their classmates will promote a positive learning environment in our classroom.
My students will greatly benefit from the dramatic play toys as they build their socialization and communication skills with one another.
If my project is funded, my classroom will become more of a second home to my students. They will enjoy their time spent there, whether it's on the carpet using their wobble cushions, playing pretend in our kitchen, or taking a break using the sensory toys.
