My Students

I teach in a co-taught special education Pre-K classroom that consists of 42-3 year old students. Half of the students in the class have special needs while all of them come from very low income families. They all have diverse backgrounds including family structure and the different languages spoken. The one thing they all have in common is that when they enter my classroom, I am their very first teacher and this school year will be there first ever school experience.

My students are loving, energetic, insightful, inquisitive and hard workers; they are our future inventors, mathematicians, scientists, gardeners, and doctors.

My Project

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin.

Sensory or hands on play, benefits a child's learning and enhances cognitive and social-emotional skills, language and physical development as well as enhances their creativity.

As students learn through hands on play, its important to incorporate into the various daily learning activities that I do. Shaving cream has become a staple in my classroom. We use it in multiple activities: as a play prop, an accent for an art activity, or for a hands on learning activity to make learning a fun experience. The students absolutely love to use in on their trays as they are learning how to write or draw their shapes, letters or numbers. We mix it with paint to add color or dimensions.

I am excited to add in the fruit as well as pots and pans to our kitchen area. The students love to pretend to cook and with the addition of the pots and pans, it will make this learning activity more realistic.
