This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are creative, ambitious, and imaginative! In my classroom, they are given the opportunity to collaborate, problem solve, and think outside the box! Theatre gives them a chance to explore the world around them and share their findings with others! Students take theatre, dance and visual art weekly. There are over 850 students in attendance, 96% of whom receive free lunch. Statistically our school is 66% Hispanic, 30% Asian, 5% White or Black. 27% of students are English Language Learners and 15% are Special Needs students. My students take pride in being a part of our school community. They are a part of the Leader in Me program in which they follow the seven habits of happy kids (be proactive, put first things first, synergize, sharpen the saw, think win-win, seek first to understand, begin with the end in mind) and strive to be leaders in our school community. Leadership roles in theatre and dance include being a stage manager, dance assistant, assistant director, lighting director, sound director, and a member of stage crew. These positions allow the students to be leaders in our school's performing arts programs.
My Project
MY students need a Puppet Theater with Dry-Erase Board and puppets, My kindergartners take part in a storytelling unit in which they explore the art of storytelling and how they too can become great storytellers. The finger puppets will allow students to see how storytelling can be brought to life though puppetry. They can create their own characters for the puppets- giving them a name, age, likes and dislikes, a background and a voice. These characters can be shared with each other on the puppet stage. Eventually the students will use these puppets to tell stories to one another in small groups.
I encourage all of my students to be proud of their work and share it with one another.
Each year my first graders are a part of a set design unit in which they create sets for a particular story. This year the settings can be displayed as backdrops on the puppet theater and the stories can be shared through a puppet show.
My second graders create original monsters each year in October. This starts on paper, leading to a drawing and eventually bringing their monster to life as a puppet. I would like them to be able to share their work with each other on the puppet stage, giving them the opportunity to take great pride in their projects.
My third graders spend about three months on an extensive puppetry unit in which they learn about the history of puppetry and the different forms (marionettes, flat puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppetry, bunraku, etc). This year I would like to have them explore the job of a puppeteer and get hands on experience as puppeteers while using the puppet theater.
