Learning centers play a crucial role in supporting students' social-emotional and academic learning, especially in the context of challenges posed by COVID-19. Learning centers can offer a physically and emotionally safe space, crucial for students dealing with the stress and uncertainties from the pandemic. Teachers during learning centers can provide emotional support, helping students navigate the challenges they may be facing due to the pandemic, such as isolation, anxiety, or grief. Learning centers additionally facilitate positive relationships between students and educators, fostering a sense of connection and belonging, which is essential for social-emotional development. Learning centers also help implement targeted SEL to encourage students develop skills like self-awareness, self-regulation, and interpersonal skills, addressing the emotional impact of the pandemic. The learning centers in our classroom can provide adaptive activities to meet the diverse needs of students, allowing for flexibility in pacing and individualized approaches to support social-emotional growth.
