Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Remembering back to my own time in Kindergarten, I can remember having the chance to be a chef, mom, teacher, doctor and veterinarian through imaginary play in my classroom. As a teacher, I now know the important role imaginary play has in a child's development and learning. Imaginary play strengthens students' language development, teaches social skills, builds peer relationships and helps with social emotional learning. I selected these items to elevate my classrooms' imaginary play area and provide versatile opportunities for students to engage in imaginary play.

Imaginary play provides a safe place for students to practice their language and communication skills, engage in peer interactions, foster creativity and have fun!

In a school where students have multiple different home languages, it is important to have play and last year, with the addition of a kitchen in the classroom, language was flourishing! My hope is that these new additions (of costumes, new food and a play stand) will provide all students with different opportunities to practice language and provide more student choice based on individual interests within the play area/ center. Furthermore, my vision with the play stand is that we can emphasize content we are learning by changing out the stand's purpose. For example, the stand can be used as a farmers market, an ice cream shop, a flower shop, a veterinarian clinic and so much more. With 20 Kindergarten students, there is no telling where their colorful imaginations may take us!
