This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Transitional kinder eagles are so excited to be at school. They are eager to learn and enjoying all their new experiences. We are learning so much and getting ready to start kindergarten next year. We are learning about ourselves, our feelings, how to be a good friend and of course letters/numbers. The TKers are curious about the world around them. We are developing so many skills and learning everyday.

Our site has high population that is low-SES (socioeconomic status) and qualify for free or reduced lunch.

We are a Title 1, Program Improvement, Dependent Charter School within an urban neighborhood setting. We also have a high percentage of English learners.

My Project

In Transitional Kindergarten we are focusing on strengthening our social and emotional skills along with language. This skills are done through what children enjoy most, PLAY! At the end of each day, we have our self select time where students choose in area they would like "play." Our kitchen is one of the most sought out areas. The imaginative play and language I hear is exciting. The living room set would allow us to expand the kitchen area. This would allow for more children to be in area allowing more opportunities to be social with other classmates and also it will provide another home area to "make-believe" in.

I truly believe that language is best acquired through purposeful play and the living room would encourage that.

The living room area can also be sometimes used in our library, giving students a comfy homey area to enjoy a good book. I also enjoy using play material when I teach. The living room would lend itself greatly when we are working in our family unit.
