Learning Through Play: Nonverbal Learning Tools for Students with Disabilities

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach students with extensive support needs. These students are between the ages of 4 and 7 years and have disabilities that make the traditional school setting and typical learning tools mostly inaccessible. Many of my students are experiencing delays in their communication and language development, so they have difficulty demonstrating their learning and understanding in conventional ways. And over half my students are also multilingual learners. Students like mine need specialized instruction and a nontraditional, creative classroom setup in order to access learning in productive and meaningful ways. We use visually engaging materials, tactile and kinesthetic learning activities, lots of music, and other sensory engagement activities to encourage the students’ development of pre-academic skills. As an education specialist, it is my job to develop innovative and creative ways both to reach my students and teach new concepts and also for them to reach me and demonstrate their skills and learning. Learning through play is essential!

Nonverbal learning activities offer students opportunities to answer questions and demonstrate understanding without being asked to speak.

The learning tools in this project are accessible for all my students. Letter sound teaching tubs and math and reading folder game libraries and social skills folder games and alphabet dinosaurs and letter puzzles and magnet letter builders and story sequencing cards and language building lotto and letter and number magnet trace & write and counting and sorting magnet mazes and ice cream scoop counting and colors and shapes sensory pads and color matching board bead game and nuts and bolts counting and number peg boards and build-a-burger sequencing stacker and snap addition… oh, my! These tools are all accessible tools for teaching students with extensive support needs, and they are eager to participate in learning when it involves play.
