Learning through play in a Pre-K classroom in Queens!

My Students

I work with an incredible group of diverse kindergarten students. Most of the families are low income families and educational materials are hard to come by.

Early childhood grades have always been something that is very near and dear to my heart.

There are so many different cultures and personalities, but the one thing that my students all have in common is that they all love to learn and work together as a classroom community. They each have a lot to offer and share.

My Project

I am requesting solo cups and paper plates to make music instruments for my pre-k students. As a music teacher in a title 1 school, we have limited access to musical instruments. Part of my curriculum is to teach students how to make different instruments using everyday materials. With the cups and paper plates, I plan to put rice and beans within the plates and cups to make shakers. We are also in dire need of new plastic boats for our water table. Water is one of the units of study in our curriculum. Students are asked to test out different materials that would sink or float. One of the items that I am missing from my water table is plastic boats.

Light is the following unit after water and we would love to have x-rays for our light table.

X-rays will allow the students to act out as doctors who can study about the different bones within our bodies. It will be perfect for our dramatic play area.

Each of these pre-selected material is an essential piece that is missing with my current centers. We have a lovely light table that could use some pretend play x-rays. Using the cups and paper plates, we will make many different musical instruments such as a shaker.
