Learning Through Play: A Grocery Store for Students with Autism

Help me give my students play food, baskets, a cash register, play money, and books about shopping for hands-on learning and life skills.

My Project

I teach an incredible group of students with autism and cognitive disabilities. For them, learning life skills like counting money, identifying prices, and making simple purchases is critical for their independence. However, traditional worksheets and paper tasks don’t engage them the way hands-on activities do.

That’s why I’m creating a pretend grocery store in our classroom!

This interactive space will include play food, price tags, a pretend cash register, shopping baskets, play money, and books about shopping. My students will practice real-world skills like:

-Identifying and counting coins and bills

-Reading price tags and making simple purchases

-Shopping off a list and following simple instructions

-Working together to make pretend purchases, building social skills

-Making choices and problem-solving in a store setting

For many of my students, learning through play is the most effective way to build confidence and independence. This pretend grocery store will bring lessons to life, helping them prepare for community outings, trips to the store with their families, and, one day, more independent living.

Your support will help me purchase play groceries (fruits, vegetables, boxed goods, etc.), a toy cash register and play money, baskets, shopping carts, and price tags, and books about shopping. With these materials, I can create a safe, structured, and engaging environment where my students can practice money, social, and decision-making skills every day.

Thank you for believing in my students and helping them build brighter, more independent futures!
